Erasure of Filipino culture and identity is a common problem among children of immigrant families. Whether it is the child’s wish or the parents’ good intentions, many grow up to realize how disconnected they are from their native languages, cultural backgrounds, and even history. Creating a place for resources to be easily accessed will help to reduce the erasure of Filipino identity and better connect people within the Filipino American diaspora. The targeted audience ranges from 16–25-year-old Filipino Americans that have been affected by this problem. I intend for them to use the resources I gather to learn more about their culture and participate in their community.
The campaign will consist of multiple deliverables such as digital posters and website. The posters will redirect people to the website, which will provide different articles and resources to cultural dances, recipes, language development, and even community involvement opportunities. Phase one of this project involves researching to confirm the optimal deliverables to create, understanding the many cultures of the Philippines and collecting content. In order to do this, I will interview peers for what they wish to learn and see. Phase two and three will be creating the deliverables in order to incite interest and providing additional resources, information, and education.
My goal is to create a space where others can sympathize and help one another to realize that they are not alone in this identity crisis. I will have reached this goal when I see communities acknowledging all cultures and languages of the Philippines, not just Bayanihan culture and Tagalog. In conclusion, in order to battle the cultural erasure within my community, we must first provide a place of education and support. Educating oneself and actively uniting the diaspora will provide a better support system for future generations.
