Fashion magazines are one of most circulated ways that people look at fashion, gain their knowledge on it, and gain their interest in it. But through these magazines they are also gaining their perception of the genders. This study aimed to determine how women are represented within fashion magazines. Specifically, in what ways do fashion magazines portray women.
To find the portrayals, a content analysis was done using U.S. Vogue magazines. The magazines ranged from years 2017-2020. Two magazines were taken from each year for the content analysis. One from January and the other from June. All images in the magazine were included in the content analysis. The images were analyzed through the following variables clothing (including lingerie and underwear), facial expression, actively looking at the camera or not, pose, nudity, represented with other men, represented with other women, and what the photo was a part of.
Preliminary findings have found that fashion magazines potray women in negative ways due to things like subordination and sexualization. It has also been found that these portrayals negatively impact women and their views of themselves and feminism in general. Through the current study more indepth and specific research was done to narrow down these potrayals through the strict variables set.
