The purpose of this study was to investigate how death and grief are portrayed in media created for children and family audiences. The goal of this research was to understand how effective these media messages can be at teaching children about the realities of these sensitive topics. Previous literature has established that TV and movies can not only strongly influence how a child processes loss and grief, but they are also often a child’s very first exposure to the concept of death. However, this research has historically focused primarily on animated content, and little has been done to look at recently released media in this specific area. As the media landscape is ever-changing, it is important to continue examining modern pieces of children’s media to understand what messages are being presented to young audiences of today. This study explores the 2020 Netflix series Julie and the Phantoms, a popular piece of live-action children’s media that deals heavily with death, loss, and grief. Through the use of thematic analysis, five central themes were identified- 1) discussions of death, 2) symbolic use of life and death, 3) spirituality and the afterlife, 4) conceptual and concrete connections to the deceased, and 5) expressions of grief and finding support. Analysis of these themes’ inclusion in the show revealed that portrayals of grief were realistic and well-rounded, while messages about death and dying were generally clouded by the heavy involvement of ghosts and the afterlife in the show's plot. This study argues that while Julie and the Phantoms might not be able to stand alone as a teaching tool for learning about death, its portrayals of grief and discussions of lost loved ones can prompt further conversations between children and their caretakers and provide a basis for deeper understanding of all aspects of death.
