Graphic design is a profession that became recognized until the 1960s in Latin America. Graphic design in some countries of Latin America faced many challenges. In other words, it was dangerous to be a graphic designer. They experienced repression and bans on printing. Oppressive governments controlled graphic design. But even with all these obstacles, graphic design flourished in Latin America. Graphic designers developed a design style, opened design schools and design studios. This paper will focus on understanding Design in Latin America and it will answer the questions: why and how did graphic design develop in Latin America, how did they overcome if at all repression, how did Latin American countries develop an identity, and how is design in Latin America different or similar to other parts of the world?
