The purpose of this study is to identify the aspects of beginning band recruitment models that prohibit families of lower socioeconomic status from participating in and continuing in band. Additionally, aspects that support participation and continuation in band will be identified. The primary research question investigates what barriers currently exist that prevent families from participating in beginning band and what supports are missing that would encourage families to participate. Participants for the case study portion of this study include four students between fifth and eighth grade who have not graduated yet and who have either (1) expressed interest in joining band but have not due to factors regarding their lower socioeconomic status or (2) participated and continued in band despite those same factors. Participants will also include four parents of students that follow the same guidelines as listed above. Participants for the survey portion of this study include as many current beginning band directors as possible. During the study, current beginning band directors will complete an online survey reflecting their thoughts and experiences with families of lower socioeconomic status participating in beginning band and how they adapted their beginning band models to reflect the needs of those families. For the case study portion, each participant will complete one to two short interviews and will answer questions regarding their experiences with beginning band. Data collection includes survey responses and interview responses. Data will be organized based on the participant’s background. All data will then be considered in order to create a beginning band model that is better suited to reach families of all socioeconomic statuses. The researcher will create a resource that includes suggestions for beginning band teachers who can implement the ideas in their programs to better reach underserved students.
