10% Povidone Iodine (PVP-I) is a potent antimicrobial agent that identifies specific pathogens of dental caries and periodontal disease, disrupting pathogenesis. This study aims to determine if implementing a PVP-I protocol in the oral cavity is a primary preventative agent against bacteria contributing to dental caries and periodontal disease. The credibility of this research is supported by peer-reviewed studies, journals, articles, and reports through quantitative data. The accumulation of bacteria initiates both periodontal disease and dental caries. With over five hundred species of bacteria in our mouth, PVP-I is a broad antiseptic that fights against the most dangerous pathogens. Dental caries prevails as the most preventable chronic disease affecting people of all ages. When PVP-I was used to halt the progression of decay by terminating Streptococcus mutans, patients exhibited a 95% disease-free oral environment for 12 months. Likewise, periodontal disease affects one in every three adults over thirty. Subgingival irrigation of PVP-I adjunctive to periodontal therapy decreased pathogen counts by 95% in 44% of pockets with ≥ 6 mm pocket depths. With the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, the need for effective alternatives is critical. PVP-I offers a compelling solution, as it remains effective without developing resistance in dental settings. This analysis will broaden the knowledge of the uses of PVP-I as an adjunct to periodontal therapy and as an addition to fluoride varnish to prevent and remineralize dental caries. Prevention is the primary focus of dental hygiene. Dental professionals should consider utilizing PVP-I in their practice due to its effectiveness, safety, and alignment with the core value of maintaining and improving oral health.
