Autonomous vehicles are transforming industries such as transportation, healthcare, and defense. This research focuses on integrating these technologies into society, examining their applications and the challenges they present. Key use cases will be explored in areas like consumer transportation, medical services, and military operations, with attention given to innovation opportunities through government contracts and funding.
A crucial part of this study is addressing the legal requirements for autonomous vehicles to operate on public roads. We will analyze current safety standards, steps necessary for road legality, and the evolving legal framework. Furthermore, the research will consider broader societal impacts, including public safety, infrastructure planning, and military strategy. For public safety, autonomous vehicles must be equipped with advanced sensors and AI systems to prevent accidents and respond quickly to changing road conditions, reducing the risk of human-induced error. In terms of infrastructure planning, cities will need to adapt traffic systems and roadways to accommodate autonomous fleets, including dedicated lanes and smart traffic signals that communicate with the vehicles. In the military sphere, applications range from automated logistics and troop transport to medevac operations.
This research identifies key stakeholders—including consumers, public services, the military, and medical services—and evaluates how advancements in autonomous technology can meet their needs while ensuring societal benefits through proper regulation and development. With the findings of this research, insights into autonomous vehicle integration will contribute to ongoing projects within the Autonomous Motorsports Purdue organization. Findings will be documented and presented to serve as a reference for future AMP initiatives.
