Susan Kare is a pioneering graphic designer whose work played a fundamental role in shaping the early design of personal computing that is both efficient and engaging. Most known for creating iconic interface elements for Apple Macintosh such as fonts, icons, applications, and the well-loved Mac “Happy Face.” She traditionally created pixel art and blended it with functional design, giving life to otherwise cold and mechanical design and humanizing the current digital interface (GUI). Kare revolutionized iconography, adding a fun and personable aspect to design computers while maintaining function. Visual language is critical, and Kare was aware of its importance; beyond her technical skill, she stayed between the lines and managed to break them, breathing life into the design and paving the way for the future. Furthermore, Kare developed an awareness that was not yet explored in the 1980’s for design was still young and developing. Her contributions not only defined the aesthetic pioneering of Macintosh but set new digital standards, establishing herself in the history of iconography and graphic design.
