This project, Ruffs Dale Unwritten, explores the untold history of Ruffs Dale, Pennsylvania, a small town with a rich yet largely overlooked past. Using a combination of archival research, oral history interviews, and community engagement, this work uncovers the town’s significant contributions to national industry, railroads, and economic growth, as well as its role in pivotal historical events. From the French and Indian War and the Underground Railroad to the town's impact on the coal and coke industry, the research highlights the resilience and spirit of Ruffs Dale’s residents—pioneers, Native Americans, enslaved individuals, immigrants, and laborers.

The project began with exploring the town’s name and quickly grew through vibrant community participation on social media, where hundreds of residents shared personal stories and historical insights. Visits to the town revealed forgotten landmarks like the Dillinger Distillery and roads named for pioneer families, while archival resources such as historic newspapers and historical biographies provided additional layers of detail. Key discoveries include the Ruff family’s foundational role in the town’s history, the presence of slavery and subsequent involvement in the Underground Railroad, and the forgotten narrative of Dillinger Distillery, which operated for over 80 years. This research not only reconstructs the town’s history but also underscores the broader significance of local history in understanding cultural identity.

This work aims to provide a comprehensive narrative of a town that history has forgotten. Ruffs Dale has largely impacted national industry and events, yet it has often been left out of our nation's history. This project demonstrates the power of local history to connect communities, preserve collective memory, and illuminate the stories that have shaped our shared heritage by illuminating a town that has been hidden for decades.
