Brian Richardson’s definition of “unnatural narrative theory” in “Unnatural Narrative Theory” set a precedent for narratologists and readers of unnatural narratives alike, describing it as the theory “of fictional narratives that defy the conventions of nonfictional narratives and of fiction that closely resembles nonfiction.” What is missing from this definition, and the work of many papers on this branch of narratology, is the consideration of nonfiction works that employ the unnatural. This presentation will first explicate two examples of unnatural narratology within the nonfiction genre: Lying: A Metaphorical Memoir by Lauren Slater and The Argonauts by Maggie Nelson. Both defy genre conventions and the “natural” structure of memoir through nonmimetic and antimimetic elements, including unnatural temporal order, intertextuality, and genre hybridity. Slater and Nelson accomplish the transgression of traditional narratology through two different approaches: where Slater blurs the demarcation between truth and fiction under the guise of a memoir, purposely writing into the form as a way to break it apart from the inside, Nelson employs the unnatural by writing away from the memoir and into a work of “autotheory” which breaks the binaries of gender and genre alike. This presentation will then examine how the latter – gender and genre – are inextricably bound in these works, therefore qualifying both as unnatural feminist narratologies. What is accomplished in these texts is not only the successful subversion of a genre largely ruled by an allegiance to the “natural” modes of writing and patriarchal order, but also the inception of feminist theory and hybridity within the memoir – an apparatus of unnatural narratology serving as an emblem for the future of feminist creative nonfiction. Ultimately, this presentation will argue that Slater’s and Nelson’s works are important seminal texts for deconstructing genre boundaries in nonfiction because they successfully implement unnatural feminist narratology.
