This presentation explores scaffolding techniques for adapting undergraduate research into hands-on, creativity-based courses aimed at solving novel, often wicked problems. Wicked problems, characterized by their complexity and lack of clear solutions, challenge students to embrace inquiry, navigate uncertainty, and trust in the process of discovery.
Through a series of projects in placemaking and environmental graphic design, this session will demonstrate how students learn to set aside preconceived solutions, overcome fears of failure, and engage deeply in creative problem-solving. These methods not only foster innovative thinking but also prepare students for real-world challenges, highlighting the transformative power of research-driven, experiential learning in graphic design education.
