This study examines the impacts of two cultural practices—tǎng píng (躺平, lying flat) in China and Quiet Quitting in the United States—and their implications for younger generations. Specifically, it investigates how these movements influence college students and educators in both countries. The research explores how American college students perceive and engage with Quiet Quitting and how American teachers and professors interpret, understand, perceive, view) its impact on students' futures. Similarly, it analyzes Chinese college students' views and interactions with tǎng píng (躺平lying flat), as well as Chinese teachers and professors' perspectives on its long-term effects.
Adopting an exploratory research design, the study incorporates surveys, interviews, and a comprehensive literature review to investigate whether these trends reflect generational shifts, cultural differences, or a combination of both. By examining attitudes and analyzing the interviewees’ view on work-life balance, ambition, and societal expectations, this research sheds light on the cultural and generational dynamics shaping students' transitions into the workforce.
Findings reveal significant similarities between tǎng píng (躺平lying flat) and Quiet Quitting, including a shared resistance to traditional notions of success and work ethic. These trends reflect deeper concerns about burnout, disillusionment with societal pressures, and a desire for alternative lifestyles. However, the study also uncovers cultural distinctions in how these cultural concepts/practices are perceived and acted upon in their respective contexts. This research highlights the importance of understanding how these movements impact not only the individual futures of students but also broader societal and workforce trends. It is relevant to students, educators, and those interested in the evolving attitudes of the current generation toward work, education, and societal norms. By drawing connections between these cultural phenomena, the study contributes to the ongoing dialogue about generational change and its implications for global society.
