Interpreting Ambiguous Communications and Ghosting in Online Dating: The Role of Rejection Sensitivity and Dating Experience

Research indicates that emerging adults increasingly use online dating apps (i.e., Hinge and Tinder) to seek out romantic relationships. Although this use of technology can be helpful in connecting to potential romantic partners, it could also be detrimental to one’s mental health, particularly for those who are more sensitive to rejection. Studies have indicated that those who are “rejection sensitive” are more likely to experience rejection, even when the intent to reject is ambiguous, and are more likely to be distressed by perceived rejection. This is relevant to online dating because when you communicate with only words and no facial expressions or tone of voice, rejection sensitive individuals may interpret ambiguous text messages (SMS) as rejection and be more distressed by them. This may be particularly true at the beginning of an online dating relationship when you are getting to know someone based only on messages exchanged.  This quantitative study examines how emerging adults respond to hypothetical ambiguous and ghosting online dating scenarios based on their rejection sensitivity and prior dating experiences. Participants will be approximately 200 college students between the ages of 18 and 25 who are attending a small university. They will complete an anonymous online survey consisting of the following measures: Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire (RSQ), Inventory of Dating Stress (IDS), and Responses to Ambiguous Dating Communications Questionnaire.  Data will be analyzed using correlation and regression analyses.  We predict that individuals higher in rejection sensitivity and who report more negative dating experiences will be more likely to interpret ambiguous online dating scenarios as rejection and respond with more distress.  We also expect that “ghosting” communications will be experienced as more distressing by those higher in rejection sensitivity.
