The father of Futurism, Filippo Marinetti, founded Futurism in Italy back in the early
20th century from the constant evolving technological advances and social changes, and that had
an immense impact on graphic design as a whole. This essay will explore how Futurism honing
in on technology, speed, and dynamism impacted graphic design. In addition to those topics,
we’ll also be exploring Filippo Marinetti’s fascination with the machine age and how that led to
brand new approaches to graphic design. We will also be reviewing some other artists and their
takes on Futurism. By Marinetti rejecting traditional norms and embracing new technology and
styles, Futurism truly had an extreme influence on modern day graphic design. It absolutely
molded and shaped many properties and techniques of graphic design, while creating new ones
as well, and we can even see those aspects in designs today. Alongside that, it even paved a path
for new typography in relation to graphic design, and overall simply helped push graphic design
further into the future. Designers themselves try their best to push the boundaries of what is
deemed normal, people adore things that aren’t basic. In a way, this all stems from Futurism’s
need for something different, rather than succumbing to society’s basic needs and wants. And,
not to mention, with technology advancing as it is not, Futurism is probably going to continue
evolving and shaping the way we design even a good few years from now, it may even be way
different than what it was back then, since we basically have it adapting to our modern
environment.
