Background: Black women in the United States (US) are in danger because they are dying at disproportionate rates in childbirth. They are 2.6 times more likely to die in childbirth than white women, and while they make up only 13% of the population, they make up 30% of the maternal deaths. These unnecessary deaths cross education and socioeconomic boundaries. The US is one of 2 regions worldwide with increasing maternal death rates. A correlation has been observed between implicit biases and disparities in the treatment of patients, a general lack of representation medical textbooks, as well as links between systemic racism and medical untruths such as: Black people have “thicker skin,” and feel pain less. Physicians have also been shown to chart and report pain levels for Black patients as lower than what the patient has rated. Patients report their healthcare providers do not listen to, or disregard, their concerns, and do not adequately answer their questions. Purpose: This proposal seeks to assess racism and implicit bias within students and faculty in nursing programs, as well as to provide an educational program regarding the resulting disparities to decrease these effects from ever reaching patients. Method: Addressing and assessing racism and implicit bias in nursing students and faculty through surveys and testing (such as IAT- implicit association testing, or unconscious bias testing). Education regarding medical untruths, systemic racism, and resulting health disparities would be provided. Conclusion: Addressing racism and implicit biases could help save lives of mothers and infants in the United States. Assessing these issues in nursing school, before patient care begins, could circumvent disparities in healthcare. Encouraging participation from faculty could ensure this important information is included in continuing education to affect further change in future cohorts.
