The Illusion and Reality of Parasocial Relationships with Celebrities
Abstract
This paper explores the impact parasocial relationships with celebrities have on media followers and figures. While parasocial relationships have been around for years, they are only growing, leading, in many cases, to both negative and positive interactions. The narrative review examines and dissects the history and psychology of parasocial relationships, their impact, and how parasocial relationships are used in the media. Using attachment theory as a lens, this paper also delves into the phenomenon of Taylor Swift, her use of parasocial relationships to build engagement and branding, and her clever use of social media tools to foster a sense of connection and belonging.
