This study examined the connection between romantic relationship satisfaction and gratitude expression in order to improve beneficial outcomes. By understanding these connections, couples can implement behavioral interventions to cultivate more fulfilling relationships. Although previous research has shown that these factors are positively correlated, there is a gap in the research with regard to including nonbinary participants. By including nonbinary participants in this research and adding gender inclusive language, the research team aimed to provide a safe space for individuals. Information regarding distance from a partner (long distance, living together, or living separately but in the same area) has also been overlooked. For this study, the participants (primarily Virginia Tech students) completed a 15-minute survey. They were asked a series of questions based on modified versions of the Couples Satisfaction Index (CSI) and the Appreciation in Relationships (AIR) Scale, which examine relationship satisfaction and gratitude expression, respectively. Demographic information about the participants and their partners was also collected, including distance from a partner and length of time in a relationship. Three main hypotheses guided this research: a) Higher levels of gratitude expression will be positively correlated with higher levels of relationship satisfaction, b) Gratitude expressions will decrease as the duration of a relationship increases, while reported relationship satisfaction will remain stable, and c) Participants who are living together will report lower levels of both gratitude expression and relationship satisfaction than will those who are long-distance partners or are living separately. The results showed that romantic relationship satisfaction and frequency of gratitude expression were moderately positively correlated. Satisfaction and distance from a partner were only weakly positively correlated. Satisfaction and length of time with a partner were also weakly correlated. Overall, these results showed that factors beyond duration and physical distance, like gratitude expression, can lead to satisfaction for individuals in relationships.
