The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines assimilating as “to absorb into the cultural tradition of a population or group.” When an individual linguistically assimilates, they are choosing or oftentimes, being forced to learn the predominant language to better fit in. Linguistic assimilation is a phenomenon that numerous people encounter when they immigrate into a new country. Many times, these individuals are youth thrown into an unfamiliar environment such as the public school system. The unfortunate culture shock that comes from immigrating to a country with a vastly different language leads to a significant number of detrimental consequences. From loss of native language to isolation, linguistic assimilation has many effects on Latinx individuals. In this paper, I will analyze how those effects impact this demographic of people and how the culturally accepted practice of forcing those to learn a predominant language is resulting in an alarming problem: the erasure of Latinx culture as we know it.
