Cybersecurity has become a growing concern for organizations of all sizes and sectors. Smaller non-profits, especially in rural communities, often face distinct challenges addressing these concerns due to limited budgets, minimal technical expertise, and restricted access to advanced security infrastructure which can leave them vulnerable to cyberattacks. Faculty and student researchers at several Penn State campuses will conduct a formal assessment of the cybersecurity posture of non-profits in Pennsylvania to help bridge this cybersecurity gap using a comprehensive assessment tool. We will recommend core “best practices” to enhance the security posture of non-profits who lack the necessary resources. A website will also be published to serve as a focal point for sharing our research results and practical resources. It will include an About page that outlines our mission to help non-profits safeguard their operations. The Interest Form page offers a QR code to invite them to participate in our cybersecurity assessment. The Methodology page explains the assessment process and its benefits. The Research Team Profiles page highlights the dedicated professors and student researchers leading this initiative. Finally, the Contact page provides an avenue for non-profits to connect with the research team for additional information.
Despite having no prior experience in web development, the team built the website through faculty guidance, self-taught methods, and persistent trial-and-error. Not only has this process equipped the team with new technical skills, but it has also ensured the creation of an impactful resource for this initiative. This website will expand beyond the current initiative to support ongoing research beyond Pennsylvania non-profits. By making these resources available online, our goal is to empower nonprofits across Pennsylvania to take informed steps toward better cybersecurity readiness and to safeguard their operations.
