The National Library of Medicine states that “…three in four college students self-reported feeling stressed, while one in five college students reported stress-related suicidal ideation” (Barbayannis et. al, 2022, p. 2). Nursing students, while experiencing the typical stresses of college life, face a unique set of stressors including rigorous academic schedules, emotionally demanding clinical rotations, and the pressure of mastering life-saving skills. These challenges, if left unaddressed, can lead to burnout, poor academic performance, and a diminished ability to provide quality patient care. Nurses play an important role in identifying when a patient is experiencing stress and assist them to keep it under control. As such nursing students need to also recognize the signs and symptoms in themselves, and practice ways to mitigate it. Resilience—the ability to adapt and thrive in the face of adversity—offers a powerful framework for equipping nursing students to navigate these pressures effectively.
This presentation explores the critical importance of resilience for nursing students and its role in fostering both personal and professional growth. Drawing on an extensive review of current research and real-world examples, it highlights the psychological and physiological impact of stress on nursing students and its implications for their academic success and long-term career sustainability. Attendees will gain insights into evidence-based strategies for building resilience, such as cognitive reframing, canine therapy, art and dance interventions, and peer support systems. Special attention will be given to practical applications, including the use of reflective practices during clinical rotations.
Through an interactive format, this session aims to empower college students, nursing students, educators, and administrators with actionable tools to cultivate resilience. The goal is to create a supportive educational environment where nursing students not only manage stress effectively but also develop the mental fortitude necessary to excel in the demanding field of healthcare.
