Lathrop Lineage: A Family History of Free Africans in Antebellum America
The purpose of my research project was to find, analyze, and summarize all accessible documentation of my ancestors. In this presentation, I share the results of my continuing document research uncovering the story of three generations of free Africans in Connecticut, beginning with the first in this ancestral line to be emancipated back to the 18th century. The stories of these ancestors give historical insight on the experiences ofenslaved Africans in the North and free Africans during the antebellum period. In exploring this history, I discovered an indirect crossing of paths between one of my ancestors and an ancestor of my mentor who guided me in this study.
