This research project dives deeper into why LGBTQ+ representation in Taiwan’s media entertainment challenges people’s understanding of identity, nonconformity, values, and empathy. This project examines the portrayal of queer characters through two Taiwanese films, Your Name Engraved Herein (2020) and Dear Ex (2018). It explores how Taiwan’s evolving queer consciousness challenges heteronormative society and traditional familial customs from 1987 to the present. Taiwan has become a leading nation in advocating LGBTQ+ rights in Asia, and with its 2019 legalization of same-sex marriage, it marked a significant achievement in the country’s progressive shift toward accepting queer individuals. This essay considers how Taiwan’s history of LGBTQ+ activism, social struggles, and political milestones have influenced media depictions of queer life. Both films reflect the social challenges queer individuals face, addressing themes of self-identity, societal expectations, and the complexities of love. Dear Ex explored the relationship between a widow, her late husband’s former gay lover, and their teenage son, delving into the emotional and social struggles stemming from her husband’s hidden queerness. The characters’ battle against grief, acceptance, and societal rejection dramatizes the conflict between traditional family values and queer ideals of love, empathy and family kinship. Your Name Engraved Herein is set in 1987, the year after the lift of Taiwan’s martial law period. The film features the romantic relationship between two high school boys, A-Ho and Birdy, whose bond is challenged by homophobia and societal stigma by their peers, instructors, and family members. The film reflects on the enduring emotional scars of first love, the pain of separation, and the struggle to reconcile personal identity. This essay emphasizes how Taiwanese films offer insight into queer experiences, portraying the emotional and societal challenges queer youth face in their pursuit of love, identity, and acceptance in a society that is gradually becoming more inclusive.
