Evaluating Acid Neutralizing Capacity (ANC) of selected antacids sold in grocery stores and online.
Heartburn is a symptom that results when the stomach produces too much hydrochloric acid, HCL. This condition, known as hyperacidity, is treated by antacids to neutralize the excess acid and reduce or stop the pain. Various commercial brands of antacids were bought from grocery stores in Maryland and online. A titrimetric method was carried out using 0.1 M HCL and 0.1 M NaOH. The number of moles of acid neutralized per amount of antacid and the cost analysis were calculated. The ANC of all the brands was calculated as the mEq/g. The ability of an antacid to have a high ANC is crucial in assuring its quality and efficiency.
