Stomach upset, indigestion, and acid reflux occur when the body produces an excess of HCl, which travels to more delicate tissues, causing burning and painful sensations. Antacids, which are mainly basic, are taken to buffer the acid and reduce these effects. This research created a simulated acid environment of 0.1M HCl and a fourteen (14) number. brands of antacids bought over the counter (OTC) and online were used. The pH of the HCl buffered with the antacid was read using the OHAUS PH meter at intervals of 10 minutes for 90 minutes. and subsequent addition of 5 ml of o.1M HCl at each interval. The rate of the pH change of the resulting solution was measured, and the buffering capacity was calculated. It was shown that some (OTC) antacids had a lower buffering capacity as against the standard of 3.5 for an extended period. This finding will create awareness among the masses and the regulatory bodies on the quality of the commonly sold antacids.
